Metacognition stands for thinking about thinking and becoming aware of one own thinking and the higher order of thinking skills. The term metacognition can be broken down into two words “meta” meaning beyond or on top of. There are generally two components of metacognition knowledge cognition and regulation of cognition. Metacognition is the ability to use prior knowledge in planning different strategies in using learning skills, problem-solving skills, and reflect and evaluate a student’s need. It also helps student’s individual with certain goals in comprehending text and solving math problems.   Some example teachers can use in implementing metacognition into the lesson are “planning how to approach a learning task, using appropriate skills and strategies to solve a problem, monitoring one’s own comprehension of text, self-assessing and self-correcting in response to the self-assessment, evaluating progress toward the completion of a task, and becoming aware of distracting stimuli”(“TEAL Center Fact Sheet No. 4: Metacognitive Processes,” 2017). Metacognition gives students the opportunity in recognizing what they do not understand during a lesson, provide time to reflect on an assignment, increasing student cognitive skills and the ability to track a student ‘s learning goal.

Cognitive dissonance means a situation involving conflict of attitudes, beliefs or behaviors. It produces a feeling of mental discomfort and “alteration in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviors to reduce the discomfort and restore balance” (Mcleod, 2007b).  For example, when a student needs to take a test, but they come into the classroom late and the teacher feels they cannot take the test because they came into the class late with no late note. The student will begin to feel a certain way about the teacher and not want to attend school because the teacher believes in the rules and policy of the school. The way the process can be fixed is by the teacher letting the student take the test with no excuse pass and speak with the parent in want happened with the late arrival and if it happens again the teacher should speak with the parent. As an educator I believe in helping the student and working with the parent.
